Founded on principles of sustainability and innovation, Peak Design has grown from a scrappy startup to a premium brand competing with industry giants like Patagonia. Their bags, mobile accessories, and camera gear are innovative, beautifully crafted, and quite literally the best in their category.
"We're a company that's trying to do good in the world," explains Andrew Stoner, who leads ecommerce and growth marketing. "And to be competing with the Patagonias of the world as a small bootstrapped company, it's not just inspiring—it's a testament to what's possible when purpose drives everything we do."
While the shopper fandom and rapid growth was exhilarating, the brand's Shopify theme didn't match their premium brand experience.
Challenge
A slow site and fragmented testing process put a bottleneck on growth
After five years on a Shopify theme, Peak Design reached a turning point. The team was facing several key challenges:
- Testing without a design system led to wins—and a fragmented experience: Testing is in Peak Design's DNA, but: "Over time, it led to a feeling of fragmentation and inconsistency. You may have a winning test, but it would be slightly outside of how other site elements look and feel. It all started to get a little bit chaotic."
- Winning tests never made it into the code: "We'd have these winning tests that were just running in our A/B testing tool Convert rather than ever actually making it into our codebase." This led to mounting technical debt, and increased the risk of bugs and performance issues.
- Page loads lagged: "The site was also very slow," Stoner recalls, which added friction for shoppers and left sales on the table.
For a brand processing thousands of orders monthly, these issues weren't just technical problems—they were directly impacting revenue and growth.
Goals
Build a faster, cohesive shopping experience that could support rapid testing and sustainable growth
To solve these specific challenges, Peak Design needed to:
- Create a design system that would support consistency—even with frequent testing
- Cut page load times to give shoppers a snappy experience
- Reduce landing page creation time from weeks to days
- Implement a testing process that wouldn't fragment their codebase
- Find a technical partner who understood their brand and growth ambitions
